I'm Dr. Meryl Kahan, a board-certified gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who has dedicated my entire career to women's health. I founded SheMD to offer something many women struggle to find: a gynecologist who specializes in perimenopause and menopause—the phase of life that deserves the same focused expertise you received during your childbearing years. Here, you get a trusted partner who listens, takes time, and provides comprehensive, integrated care that addresses your whole health picture.

I graduated magna cum laude from Brandeis University with degrees in History and Biology, then earned my medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University. I completed my residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where I developed a strong commitment to compassionate, evidence-based care.

During my years in both private practice and hospital-based settings in New Jersey and New York City, I saw a troubling pattern: women in perimenopause were often told their symptoms were “normal” or were given birth control as a quick fix. I realized there was a significant gap in specialized care for this life stage. That experience drove me to pursue extensive training in hormonal management and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy—and to build a practice that integrates hormone optimization with an integrative approach addressing sleep, stress, nutrition, metabolism, and movement.

Today, my focus is on helping women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s navigate perimenopause and menopause with clarity, energy, and confidence. At SheMD, I blend advanced hormone therapy with comprehensive gynecologic care, taking an integrative approach that addresses your whole health—not just your hormones in isolation.

As a gynecologist who has specialized in women's health throughout my career, I understand how symptoms like brain fog, irregular bleeding, weight changes, and low libido interconnect. I can assess whether your symptoms need hormone optimization, require gynecologic evaluation, or both—providing cohesive care that doesn't fragment you across multiple providers.

Originally from upstate New York, I now live in Westchester with my husband and our rescue pup, Bingo.

Fun facts about me:

  • I sing in a community choir (whether I'm good or not is up for debate)

  • My favorite workout is strength training — practice what you preach!

  • Travel is my passion and I've visited 6 continents so far — Antarctica, I'm coming for you!

The Comprehensive
Approach: Why
Expertise Matters

Gynecologic

Perimenopause is more than a hormone transition—it's a whole-body shift that affects multiple interconnected systems:

  • Gynecologic health (bleeding patterns, pelvic floor, sexual function)

  • Metabolic health (weight, insulin sensitivity, body composition)

  • Cardiovascular health (as estrogen levels change)

  • Bone density (osteoporosis prevention)

  • Cognitive function (brain fog, memory, mental clarity)

  • Quality of life (sleep, mood, energy, libido)

My gynecologic training allows me to see the full picture. When you're experiencing multiple symptoms at once, I can assess which are hormonal, which might need further gynecologic investigation, and how your lifestyle factors are playing a role.

I ask questions like:

  • Is this bleeding pattern a normal variation for your stage, or does it warrant deeper evaluation?

  • How are your metabolic changes affecting your hormone response?

  • What structural or functional issues might be contributing to your symptoms?

  • Are we addressing root causes or just managing surface-level concerns?

This integrated perspective is what years of specializing in women's health provides—and it's the foundation of every care plan I create.

Your health journey is deeply personal, and so is my approach. You deserve a gynecologist who specializes in this phase of your life—someone who brings both clinical expertise and genuine partnership to your care. I'm here to guide you with clarity, confidence, and comprehensive support.
